چکیده

The development mechanism of synoptic-scale disturbances over the tropical western North Pacific (WNP) associated with boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) under different phases interannual Pacific-Japan (PJ) pattern is investigated. Intraseasonal convection enhanced widely WNP for BSISO 5-7 in positive PJ years, when seasonal-mean convective activity enhanced. By contrast, developed confined South China Sea negative years. Similar features are also found horizontal distributions eddy kinetic energy (K′) representing and cyclone occurrences. differences location between years likely lead to teleconnection midlatitude East Asia. non-PJ show mixed A K′ budget analysis reveals that conversion from available potential (PeKe) synoptic primarily contributes generation during convectively active BSISO. barotropic mean K′, KmKe, second largest contributor increase lower troposphere, especially early stage disturbances. Large produced by PeKe KmKe tropics advected subtropics flow late mature stages development. There two factors can determine locations where develop KmKe. One sea surface warming suppressed preceding phases. other convergence or shear winds fluctuations monsoon westerlies WNP.

Interactions between Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillations and Synoptic-Scale Disturbances over the Western North Pacific. Part I: Energetics Diagnosis*

The role of scale interactions in the maintenance of eddy kinetic energy (EKE) during the extreme phases of the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) is examined through the construction of a new eddy energetics diagnostic tool that separates the effects of ISO and a low-frequency background state (LFBS; with periods longer than 90 days). The LFBS always contributes positively toward the EKE in the b...

Interactions between Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillations and Synoptic-Scale Disturbances over the Western North Pacific. Part II: Apparent Heat and Moisture Sources and Eddy Momentum Transport*

The interactions between the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) and synoptic-scale variability (SSV) are investigated by diagnosing the atmospheric apparent heat source (Q1), apparent moisture sink (Q2), and eddy momentum transport. It is found that the synoptic Q1 and Q2 heating (cooling) anomalies are in phase with cyclonic (anticyclonic) vorticity disturbances, aligned in a southe...

Development of Synoptic-Scale Disturbances over the Summertime Tropical Northwest Pacific

This study addresses the origin of the synoptic-scale disturbances that occur in the tropical western North Pacific ocean (WP) region in Northern Hemisphere summer. These have been called ‘‘easterly waves’’ and ‘‘tropical depression–type’’ (TD) disturbances. This analysis uses the National Center for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research reanalysis dataset. By perfor...

Interannual Variability of Summer Monsoon Onset over the Western North Pacific and the Underlying Processes

Climatological summer monsoon onset over the South China Sea (SCS) and the western North Pacific (WNP) (defined as the region of 108–208N, 1208–1608E) displays three distinct stages. Around mid-May, monsoon rain commences in the SCS and the Philippines. In early to mid-June, the monsoon rain extends to the southwestern Philippine Sea. After mid-July, the rainy season starts in the northeastern ...

A Mechanism for Explaining the Maximum Intraseasonal Oscillation Center over the Western North Pacific*

During late boreal summer (July–October), the intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) exhibits maximum variability over the western North Pacific (WNP) centered in the South China Sea and Philippine Sea, but many numerical models have difficulty in simulating this essential feature of the ISO. To understand why this maximum variability center exists, the authors advance a simple box model to elaborate ...
